Not Just About the Talk: Why I Walk

Out of the Darkness Walk

out-of-the-darkness-walk-logoI walk because I want to see people live life abundantly.  I want to see people who thought there was no hope realize they have a life worth living.  I walk because I have seen the quake left behind in families who have had someone commit suicide.  I walk because I see families who live in fear that each day may be the day their loved one is successful in an attempt. I walk because you matter.

Witnessing the gut wrenching, shattered heart pain a mom experienced in my office was more than reason enough to walk.  The unanswered questions, the guilt, the shame, the anger, and the unending sense of loss is more than any person should ever experience,  I walk for the third grader who came in my office in tears wondering how the high schooler, whom he did not know, could have taken her life and questions if anyone tried to help her. You see, suicide does not impact just the immediate family, but the community at large.  I can only reach one person at a time, however walking provides me an opportunity to reach many through the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

I walk to raise awareness and funds for the AFSP.  AFSP provides support, resources, education, and research for individuals, families, and professional for the intervention and prevent of suicide.

I’m walking in the Out of the Darkness Grand Rapids Walk to fight suicide and support AFSP’s bold goal to reduce the suicide rate 20% by 2025.
